Hello friends! I’m so excited to share another wedding vendor spotlight on my dear friend Jesilyn Kay, owner of Jesilyn Kay Calligraphy!   This super talented business woman is located here in Austin, Texas and has become a dear friend through the Rising Tide Society.  If you’re one of my 2018 couples you’ll recognize some of her work from your beautiful handmade welcome gifts!  If you’re looking for unique and custom gift ideas, read this interview and make sure to check out her website and etsy shops (links down below!)

What sort of services do you provide?

As a designer and calligrapher, I can provide all of your paper goods and signage needs. This includes custom wedding invitations and save the dates, envelope addressing, place cards, welcome signs, menu signs, any signage or paper goods you might need, I can create it for you.

How long have you been doing this and why are you drawn to it?

I’ve always been a creative person, I was the one doodling in my notebook during class, and I love creating things with my hands. I went to school for graphic design and after working in the industry for a few years after college I began to create a lot of hand lettered posters and designs. It was so fun for me to create my own letters instead of use computer fonts and I knew I had to try learning calligraphy.

I took a few courses and fell head over heels in love with the art. I didn’t want to do anything else but practice and practice for hours.  After a few months of this I put together my website and have been creating calligraphy and signage for weddings for over 4 years now.

How long does it take for envelope addressing and do you provide the envelopes or
do I?

I absolutely love envelope addressing!! Depending on how many envelopes you have and how much addressing you will need (main address, return address, etc) it would take a minimum of one week and possibly up to three weeks. Usually the client provides the envelopes but I am happy to work with you on finding the right envelopes and include them in your overall cost.

Do you really create every letter by hand?

Yes! All envelope addressing and lettered signage and paper goods are created by hand by me! I love how it makes every piece one of a kind and completely customized.

What is your favorite thing to create?

I love creating custom wedding invitation suites. It allows me to really get to know the couple and create something personable for them. It’s also the first part of their wedding that their guests will get to see. It sets the stage for the style and theme of a wedding, that’s really special to me.

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever lettered on?

This past spring I was asked to create a seating chart on a very large faux leather hide! It was close to the size of a 5×9 ft table and I worked on it over a period of 4 days. It was a challenge but it turned out lovely!!

Do you do anything else besides work for weddings?

Yes! I have two Etsy shops, one where I sell custom gifts such as coffee mugs and ring dishes. And the other I create printable wedding signs and home décor prints. I also teach calligraphy classes at Craft a few times a month.
