Have you ever visited a place that completely takes your breath away?! After seeing photos of Italy’s Cinque Terre I was so excited to plan our day trip from Florence to visit these famous 5 sea-side towns along Italy’s northern ‘riviera’ for myself. We rode the morning train from Florence out to La Spazia before connecting on the infamous (non-airconditioned, loud, jam-packed) local train that take visitors to each little town since cars aren’t really available. It was full of adventure and tourists and lots of sweat. Lots. We were visiting the CT during the hight of tourist season and Italy was enjoying a severe heat wave – so why not choose the most difficult hike between Monterosso to Vernazza to weed out the majority of those tourists?!
Once we arrived in Monterosso, we enjoyed the quiet of the town and carbo-loaded on some fresh pesto pasta, pesto gnocchi and pesto bruschetta – you know since PESTO was created in this region of Italy! It was delicious and helpful as we ascended up and around mountains for the next 2 hours encompassing 3 miles. Our goal was to come around the bend and see the view of Vernazza, the most popular city of the 5….popular enough to be the view of a puzzle my parent’s just happened to put together a year ago!
It was worth the sweat and calorie-burning hike and I’m so excited to share some of the photos I took along the way!! Enjoy and I”ll have one more from our trip down to Sorrento, Capri and Naples in a few days!! Caio!

Cliffside view of Monterosso looking back on where we started:
About 2 hours later, we came around the bend to the next town – Vernazza!
We made it to the viewpoint!! It was an exhausting 3km uphill/downhill hike with a few stops along the way for me to take photos catch my breath . We stopped at one point to enjoy some fresh lemonade from a local farmer which was refreshing and enjoyable!
We then took a train over to Manarola since the ferry’s weren’t running that day to to heavy swells in the sea. It’s not as picturesque but was fun to get to see 3 out of the 5 cities! Maybe next time I’ll make it to Corniglia and Riomaggiore!
Have you visited the Cinque Terre? What was your favorite part? Leave a comment and come back soon for Part 3 of my trip to Italy!
Caio!!
