How long have you been doing wedding hair and makeup?
9 years
What’s your favorite thing about being a part of a bride’s wedding day?
I love the transition of a girl on her wedding day becoming this beautiful, picture perfect bride as the hair, makeup, dress and jewelry all come together. It’s magical!
What advice do you have to make sure the bride’s on time for the pre-ceremony photos?
I always collect as many details as I can prior to the wedding day. I ask a lot of questions so that I can send out a broken down, very detailed timeline for the day of. I don’t think you can be over prepared in getting everyone ready for pre-ceremony pictures on time. I 100% recommend the bride doing a trial run for hair and makeup prior to the wedding day. That way she will know exactly what she likes and doesn’t. It’s also important for the stylist/artist to get an idea of the type of hair they will be working with to truly allow the right amount of time.
How much time does it typically take to do hair and makeup on a wedding day?
That definitely depends on how many people are having hair and makeup done, as well as how they’re choosing to wear their hair. Updo’s take a bit more time than hair styled down. Another reason it’s important that I ask so many questions. I’d estimate an updo takes about an hour and I usually allow 45 min for each makeup application.
What advice do you have for a bride deciding on a hairstyle for her wedding day?
#1 is definitely book a trial run with your stylist!! It’s important to take in account the weather, time of year, whether it’s an indoor or outdoor wedding, the dress, the style of the wedding, the bride’s type of hair, but most importantly a style that’s realistic and she loves. Most bride’s turn straight to Pinterest for ideas, which is great. However, it’s important to have an open mind and use those ideas as a blueprint & adjust to accommodate for different hair types.
What can a bride do to be prepared for her wedding day makeup?
EYE BROW MAINTENANCE!!! Don’t go try a new facial, or get your eyebrows waxed for the first time the week of the wedding. I recommend proper everyday skincare (cleanse, exfoliate & moisturize). Facials are great, but no bride wants to react to any new products the week of her wedding. So, get one in advance. Groomed eyebrows are a MUST! If you don’t normally get your brows waxed, don’t do it a couple days before the wedding…but do get to plucking!! Try a wax a few months in advance to make sure you don’t have any skin reactions. (TIP: Don’t let the esthetician put any oil based wax remover on you skin after waxing. Don’t touch the area of skin that has been waxed, and don’t apply makeup for 12-24 hours. Your pores are wide open after a wax and any of these things will deposit dirt/oil into the pores causing breakouts.) If you have sensitive skin it’s a good idea to schedule a trial run with your makeup artist to make sure you don’t react to any of the makeup used.
Should a bride clean her hair the morning before getting her hair done?
NO! If she is wearing her hair all up, I tell my brides to wash their hair the morning before or sometimes even 2 nights before. If she is wearing it down the night before is ok. Clean hair is very slick and very hard to get it to do what you want it to do and stay that way.
What’s your advice to keeping a bride ‘photo’ ready all day long?
I prep and prime everything as far as the hair and the skin as I’m getting my brides ready. I also set the makeup and hair with a finishing spray. It’s important for the bride to have a lip color or gloss nearby for touchups throughout the day/night.
How early should a bride contact you to book their wedding day hair & makeup?
It’s never too early 🙂
