Hey guys! I am so excited to share another Austin wedding vendor spotlight here on the blog! Over the past year, I’ve gotten to work with so many talented creatives and it’s such a joy to get to know them better. Today, please meet the talented and sweet owner behind The Flower Girl, Kari Shelton! An Austin native and Hill Country resident, she’s blossomed her floral business located at Pecan Springs Ranch and is busier than ever helping make bride’s dreams come true. She has some great advice for future brides on finding your floral design to enhance your wedding day! Thank you Kari and team for a fun day!!
Full time since 2004
The favorite thing are the hugs and praise that it was all they dreamed of and more. To bring to reality something that whas been planned for and thought about in great detail for sometimes over a year is truly exciting and every bit why I do what I do – the hugs and gratefulness of the parents and couples are all worth the hard work.
Meet with a florist first – before buying decor at local hobby shops, before deciding on budget, before anything is planned in decor. Many items that are bought are not necessary and could save brides so much. You actually can afford one (especially after saving from not buying all the DIY decor).
hands on time – is about 30 minutes – but this does not include the time before deciding on the perfect stems to compose of the bouquet, centerpiece, etc. Talent comes from those in our business knowing what to buy to make that bouquet simply beautiful. Not just being able to execute it. The right flower – no matter your budget- really makes the arrangement.
My favorite is texture – I would have to say the deep reds, cranberry and champagne tones all with texture in the bouquet or centerpiece is my favorite – more berries, pods and interesting greenery is the best!
First meeting – she needs to know what she likes and dislikes in floral style and flowers. Knowing the space of the ceremony and reception is helpful too.
My favorite floral to work with is fresh! Just kidding – but really – I love what I do and we may have three blush weddings a weekend – but making each one reflect that brides personality and style is challenging and exciting!
I used to design for other florists when I was younger taking vacations to help out on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, Christmas, etc. Has always been something I tinkered with in my spare time. Finally in 2004 I made the leap of faith to pursue it professionally full time.
With how busy everyone is and dates booking fast – we suggest about 9 months out.Typically after your venue is booked and you have bought your dress. Knowing colors and themes is not necessary we help you figure all of that out. 🙂
Water! They are flowers and need water – we supply every bride with a vase for her bouquet. Before, during and after pictures it is best to keep them in the water – not always convenient – but for them to last as long as possible this is best. Stems can always be dried off with a few towels before holding.
In my spare time I enjoy gardening and antique shopping. Not too different from things I sometime do for my business! I am a Native Austinite and enjoy spending time with my family who all live here in the area as well as my husband Toby and three beautiful children, Erin (20), Emily (7) and Joshua (4).
